In CONSTELLATIONS serie – watercolour and cutouts on paper laid on canvas – Ruffo superimposes two different geographical maps: the background consists of a terrestrial map, an instrument which over the centuries has become increasingly precise and that, however, being connected to political changes often becomes unreliable; the upper level, painted and cutout, represents instead a celestial map in which the main stars and the constellations of the sky are indicated. This type of representation that date back to Greek astronomy, often extremely detailed in describing the mythological figures related to the constellations, are maps inaccurate from a scientific point of view but at the same time immutable over the centuries and therefore reliable.
With these works the artist intends to investigate the phenomenon of the displacement of persons from a wider historical overview. Contemporary events represent an irrelevant moment, were it not for the intense stories of the involved individuals, that we maybe had the privilege to listen and help, exactly because we try to help ourselves, with the unconscious fear that the next ones to have to escape could be us.
Nella serie CONSTELLATIONS – acquerello e intagli su carta intelata - Ruffo sovrappone due differenti carte geografiche: lo sfondo è costituito da una carta terrestre, strumento che nei secoli è diventato sempre più preciso e che essendo però legato ai cambiamenti politici diventa spesso inaffidabile; il livello superiore, dipinto e intagliato, rappresenta invece una carta celeste in cui sono indicate le principali stelle e le costellazioni del cielo. Questo tipo di raffigurazioni che risalgono all’astronomia greca, spesso estremamente ricche di particolari nel descrivere le figure mitologiche relative alle costellazioni, sono mappe inesatte da un punto di vista scientifico ma allo stesso tempo immutabili nei secoli e quindi affidabili.
Con questi lavori l’artista intende indagare il fenomeno dello spostamento dei popoli da una panoramica storica più ampia in cui gli avvenimenti contemporanei rappresentano un momento quasi irrilevante, se non fosse per l’intensità delle storie delle singole persone coinvolte, che magari abbiamo avuto il privilegio di ascoltare e di aiutare, proprio perché in fondo cerchiamo di aiutare noi stessi, con la paura inconscia che i prossimi a dover fuggire potremmo essere noi.
